A 9179: Relates to the passing of stopped school buses on divided highways; provides that vehicles traveling in the opposite direction of a school bus on such highway shall not have to stop if a physical barrier is present between the different directions of travel.
The bill aims to amend the Vehicle and Traffic Law to improve road safety, particularly for school buses and pedestrians. When a school bus stops on a divided highway with four or more lanes, drivers must stop before reaching the bus if there is a red visual signal. However, if a driver is traveling in the opposite direction on a divided highway, they are not required to stop. The bill also requires school bus drivers to instruct passengers to cross the road in front of the bus and to keep the bus halted with flashing red lights until the passengers have reached the opposite side. This ensures the passengers are at least 15 feet away from the bus and off the road or on a sidewalk. The changes to the law take effect immediately.
