A 9190: Prohibits the use of most artificial intelligence in classrooms prior to high school except for AI used for diagnostic purposes or explicit instruction interventions for students with disabilities.
What A 9190 does, verified June 6, 2026
The proposed law aims to restrict the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms prior to high school. AI systems that make decisions based on algorithms, machine learning, or data-driven modeling are prohibited in elementary, middle, and high schools before the ninth grade. However, AI may be used for diagnostic purposes or explicit instruction interventions for students with disabilities, with the commissioner providing guidance on permissible uses and best practices. Teachers, administrators, and other school personnel can still use AI for administrative and planning purposes. The law will take effect on the first day of July after it becomes a law.
