J 1229: Commemorating the unveiling of the Solomon Northup sculpture "Hope Out of Darkness" as a historic milestone
The bill commemorates the unveiling of a bronze sculpture titled "Hope Out of Darkness" in honor of Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped, sold into slavery, and held captive for 12 years. This sculpture, created by artist Wesley Wofford, is a powerful reminder of the importance of telling the full and inclusive history of the state and honoring the experiences of all New Yorkers, especially those whose voices have been silenced. The sculpture's unveiling coincides with what would have been Solomon Northup's 218th birthday, serving as a call to truth, healing, and historical reckoning. The bill recognizes the significance of Solomon Northup's story, which has been documented in various forms of media, including a landmark memoir and a film adaptation, and has left a lasting impact on the nation's conscience. The sculpture will eventually find its permanent home in Marksvil…
