What J 55 does, verified January 14, 2025

The city of Gloversville, New York, is being recognized for its 135th anniversary. The area was settled in 1752 due to its abundant hemlock forests, which provided resources for leather production and glove-making. The community became known as Gloversville in 1828 and was previously referred to as "Stump City" due to leftover stumps from hemlock harvesting. At its peak, Gloversville produced 90% of the gloves in the USA from 1890 to 1950. The city thrived due to the presence of ancillary businesses and industries supporting the glove-making industry. Gloversville was formally incorporated as a village in 1853 and as a city in 1890. Today, the city continues to prioritize enhancing the quality of life of its citizens and providing essential services.
