J 64: Commemorating the 225th Anniversary of the Town of Lowville, New York
This resolution commemorates the 225th anniversary of the town of Lowville, New York. The town was settled in 1798 by a company from Westfield, Massachusetts, and was formed in 1800 from the town of Mexico in Oswego County. The town was named after Nicholas Low, an early landowner and Dutch immigrant. Agriculture and dairy farming flourished in the area due to the rich soil on the Black River flats. The town's economy grew with the opening of the Black River Canal, Rome, Watertown, and Ogden'sburg Railroad, and the Lowville and Beaver Railroad. Today, the town continues to provide a high quality of life for its residents, with a bright outlook for the future. The resolution recognizes the town's rich history and enduring contribution to the state of New York.

Senate Resolution No. 64 BY: Senator WALCZYK COMMEMORATING the 225th Anniversary of the Town of Lowville, New York WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 225th Anniversary of the Town of Lowville, New York; and WHEREAS, Settled in 1798 by a company from Westfield, Massachusetts, the Town of Lowville was formed in 1800 from the Town of Mexico in Oswego County; and WHEREAS, In 1803, part of Lowville was used to form the Town of Harrisburg; and WHEREAS, The Town of Lowville was named after Nicholas Low, an early landowner and Dutch immigrant who immigrated from the rural community outside of Amsterdam; and WHEREAS, Agriculture and dairy farming flourished in the Lowville area because of the rich soil on the Black River Flats; with the opening of the Black River Canal in 1851, the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad in 1867, and the Lowville and Beaver Railroad in 1906, industries flourished, including QubicaAMF, the largest manufacturer of bowling pins in the world, and Kraft, the largest cream cheese plant in the country; and WHEREAS, Furthermore, dedicated in 2006, the Maple Ridge Wind Farm is one of the largest wind farms in the United States; the site has 195 wind turbines which provide about $10 million to the local community; and WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth and change, the Town of Lowville continues to provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and WHEREAS, Today, the residents of the Town of Lowville have a bright outlook for the future of their community, which remains a beautiful place in which to live and raise a family; and WHEREAS, In recognition of the Town of Lowville rich history and enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is proud to pay tribute to this spirited town upon the occasion of its 225th Anniversary; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 225th Anniversary of the Town of Lowville, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the Town of Lowville, New York.
