K 1576: Memorializing Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim September 26, 2026, as Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day in the State of New York

This resolution requests that Governor Kathy Hochul officially proclaim September 26, 2026, as Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day in New York State. The bill aims to honor officers who have died by suicide, raise public awareness about mental health challenges within law enforcement, and reduce the stigma associated with seeking help. It highlights that more officers die by suicide than are feloniously killed in the line of duty and notes that over half of these deaths involve officers from local police departments. The resolution emphasizes that large agencies account for a disproportionate number of suicides compared to their size and supports the implementation of peer support programs to provide mental health assistance to those who understand the unique nature of the profession.
