What K 247 does, verified March 25, 2025

The proposed bill aims to memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim March 22-28, 2025, as Doula Week in New York State, in conjunction with the observance of World Doula Week. This recognition is intended to celebrate the noble aims and accomplishments of doulas, who provide support to women, newborns, and families during labor and the postpartum period. The benefits of doula support include reducing the incidence of C-sections, post-partum mood disorders, and epidural and analgesic requests. Doulas can also shorten the length of labor, increase breastfeeding initiation and continuation, and boost mother's satisfaction with their birth experience. Additionally, doulas can increase new parents' confidence in caring for their newborn. The bill seeks to acknowledge the positive impact of doulas and promote their recognition by the citizens of New York State.
