K 452: Memorializing Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 2025, as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month in the State of New York
The bill aims to increase awareness of motorcycle safety in New York State. It is customary for the legislative body to recognize official months to raise awareness of issues affecting citizens. The bill memorializes Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 2025 as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month. This is done to reduce the number of fatalities involving motorcycle riders, who are often killed by drivers who do not see them. The bill acknowledges that motorcyclists in New York were involved in 4,851 traffic crashes in 2022 and 163 motorcyclists were killed. It recognizes that fatal motorcyclist crashes account for 16% of all motor vehicle deaths and that the number of motorcyclists is increasing yearly. The bill calls for greater public awareness of motorcycle safety issues and encourages education to teach riders to be more aware of safety issues and road hazards.
