K 556: Memorializing Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 23, 2025, as Long Island Sound Day in the State of New York
The proposed day, Long Island Sound Day, is set for May 23, 2025. It aims to increase public awareness and appreciation for the natural resources of New York State. The Long Island Sound is an estuary where saltwater and freshwater mix, supporting a diverse array of wildlife and commercial/recreational activities worth billions of dollars annually. The sound has been designated as an Estuary of National Significance and is home to numerous bird species, fish, and other marine life. The proposed day recognizes the sound's importance in the life cycles of many species and its role in supporting the state's economy and natural beauty. New York joins Connecticut in declaring the Friday before Memorial Day as Long Island Sound Day.
