K 617: Memorializing Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 28, 2025, as Blood Cancer Day in the State of New York
The resolution aims to recognize May 28, 2025, as Blood Cancer Day in the state of New York. This observance is meant to increase awareness about blood cancers, which affect someone in the US every three to four minutes. Blood cancers are life-threatening and can only be treated with a bone marrow or blood stem cell transplant, which can cure or treat more than 75 different diseases. The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) plays a crucial role in finding matching donors for patients, and over 700 New Yorkers have joined the registry in the last five years. The resolution encourages residents to add their name to the registry, which has over 42 million lifesaving donors worldwide. A special event will be held at the New York State Capitol on May 29, 2025, to raise awareness and offer registration opportunities.
