What S 1200 does, verified January 10, 2026

The bill aims to grant academic credit to New York state residents who have served in the military. A veteran is defined as someone who has served in the US military and been released under honorable conditions, or who has been furloughed to the reserve or resumed service in a state militia. Veterans enrolled as full-time undergraduate students in good standing at state-operated institutions can apply for credits without limitation for courses that match their military training or service. The completed courses must meet the standards of the American Council on Education or its equivalent to qualify for credits. No fees, tuition, or other charges will be assessed against veterans who qualify for these credits. The board of trustees is responsible for implementing these provisions. The bill takes effect on July 1st, following its enactment into law.
