S 1492: Removes the exemption for restaurants, taverns or similar food service establishments from the New York state bag waste reduction act.
The bill aims to amend the environmental conservation law to exempt certain types of bags from plastic carryout bag regulations. Exemptions include bags used to contain or wrap uncooked meat, fish, or poultry, or to package bulk items such as fruits, vegetables, or grains. Other exemptions include bags used to contain food sliced or prepared to order, newspaper bags for delivery, or bags sold in bulk to consumers. The bill also exempts bags used by a customer to carry out or deliver food from a restaurant, tavern, or similar food service establishment. The exemptions do not include plastic bags provided by a pharmacy to carry prescription drugs. The bill takes effect immediately.
