S 1526: Requires that parents of students at student orientations, back to school nights, or other beginning of year events, at schools that participate in the national school lunch program or school breakfast program, receive notification of eligibility, and access to application, for free or reduced price meals for students.
The bill requires public schools, charter schools, and non-public schools that participate in federal meal programs to provide parents with prominent notification and access to information about applying for free or reduced-price meals. At new student orientations, back-to-school nights, or other beginning-of-year events, parents must receive notification and a fillable application to apply for free or reduced-price meals. This notification and application will be available in paper or electronic form, or both. The goal of this requirement is to ensure that parents are informed about and can apply for free or reduced-price meal eligibility.
