What S 1558 does, verified January 9, 2026

The bill aims to allow patients to designate an "essential visitor" who can assist the patient and perform certain duties on their behalf. This visitor can provide emotional and physical support, such as helping with eating and dressing, and communicate the patient's needs to hospital staff. Patients have the right to designate one individual as their essential visitor, who must act as an advocate for the patient and provide emotional stability and company. The essential visitor will have unrestricted access to the patient, but facilities can require precautionary measures, such as screenings and personal protective equipment, prior to admission or denial of entry. The bill takes effect immediately, allowing patients to designate their essential visitors and promoting their well-being and care.
