S 1742: Increases the penalty of knowingly violating the provisions relating to the appropriate shelter for dogs from a violation to a misdemeanor, punishable by imprisonment for not more than one year, or by a fine not less than five hundred dollars nor more than one thousand dollars, or by both.
The bill aims to increase penalties for people who leave dogs outside without providing them with proper shelter. Currently, the law requires dog owners to provide shelter suitable for their dog's breed, physical condition, and climate. If a person knowingly violates this provision, they can face a fine of $50 to $250 for the first offense and $100 to $250 for subsequent offenses. The bill also introduces the possibility of imprisonment for up to one year or a fine of $500 to $1000 for repeat offenders. Additionally, each day a dog is left outside without proper shelter after a violation is discovered will be considered a separate offense.
