S 2207: Provides for payment by the state of certain traveling costs and fees associated with the psychiatric examination of defendants to determine mental fitness.
The bill aims to reform the psychiatric examination process for defendants in New York. It introduces a new fee structure for psychiatric examiners, providing a flat rate of $50 for each examination and $50 for each court appearance. Additionally, examiners who work for the state of New York are entitled to reasonable traveling expenses, unless they conduct an examination outside their regular working hours in a county with a shortage of qualified psychiatrists. In such cases, examiners can claim the fees and expenses for sending the defendant to another location for examination, as well as for the defendant's maintenance and return. These costs will be borne by the county where the defendant is being tried. The bill takes effect immediately and applies to expenses incurred on or after the effective date.
