S 2216: Establishes Eid-al-Adha and Eid-Al-Fitr as school holidays in certain school districts.
The proposed law aims to recognize and respect two significant Islamic holidays: Eid-al-Adha and Eid-al-Fitr. These holidays will be observed as school holidays for all public schools in New York State. The law requires school authorities to close public schools on these days. Additionally, the law addresses the calculation of school days, allowing for the observance of these holidays without affecting the overall number of school days. If necessary, the observed holidays will be counted as regular school days. The law will take effect 100 days after it becomes a law, and schools will be required to comply with the new regulations immediately upon its effective date.
