What S 2269 does, verified June 5, 2025

The bill aims to require certain motion picture theaters to provide scheduled showings of motion pictures with open motion picture captioning. A motion picture theater that offers more than ten showings per week must provide at least one quarter of all showings of a motion picture with four or more showings during a one-week time period with open captioning. The requirement applies to showings that start and end within peak attendance hours, unless fewer than one in eight showings are screened during peak hours. The bill also allows for some flexibility and exemptions, such as for showings that overlap with other captioned showings. Motion picture theaters are required to advertise the date and time of captioned showings and maintain documents to demonstrate compliance for a period of at least three years. Violators may face a civil penalty of not less than $100 nor more than $500.
