What S 25 does, verified January 9, 2026

The proposed law aims to bar individuals convicted of hate crimes from attending state public schools and colleges. A conviction under the penal law for a hate crime would result in immediate expulsion from the institution. If the conviction is later overturned upon appeal, the individual would be reinstated to their previous standing. The law would take effect immediately and apply to students starting from the 2026-2027 academic year.
