Subdivision 1 of section 16 of the veterans' services law, 2 is amended to read as follows: 3 1. A local director shall designate the location of the local and 4 branch offices of the local veterans' service agency within [his or her] 5 such director's jurisdiction, which offices shall be open during conven- 6 ient hours. The [cost of maintenance and operation of a county veterans'7service agency shall be a county charge and the cost of maintenance and8operation of a city veterans' service agency shall be a city charge,9excepting that the] state commissioner with the approval of the veter- 10 ans' services commission shall allot and pay, from state moneys made 11 available to [him or her] them for such purposes, to each county veter- 12 ans' service agency and each city veterans' service agency, an amount 13 equal to [fifty per centum of] its expenditures for maintenance and 14 operation approved by the state commissioner, provided that in no event 15 shall the amount allotted and paid for such approved expenditures 16 incurred in any given year exceed (1) in the case of any county veter- 17 ans' service agency in a county having a population of not more than one 18 hundred thousand or in the case of any city veterans' service agency in 19 a city having a population of not more than one hundred thousand, the 20 sum of twenty-five thousand dollars, nor (2) in the case of any county 21 veterans' service agency in a county having a population in excess of 22 one hundred thousand excluding the population of any city therein which 23 has a city veterans' service agency, the sum of twenty-five thousand 24 dollars, and, in addition thereto, the sum of five thousand dollars for EXPLANATION--Matter in italics (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [] is old law to be omitted. LBD06871-01-5S. 2582 2 1 each one hundred thousand, or major portion thereof, of the population 2 of the county in excess of one hundred thousand excluding the population 3 of any city therein which has a city veterans' service agency, nor (3) 4 in the case of any city veterans' service agency in a city having a 5 population in excess of one hundred thousand, the sum of twenty-five 6 thousand dollars, and, in addition thereto, the sum of five thousand 7 dollars for each one hundred thousand, or major portion thereof, of the 8 population of the city in excess of one hundred thousand. Such popu- 9 lation shall be certified in the same manner as provided by section 10 fifty-four of the state finance law. 11 § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
