What S 2593 does, verified January 10, 2026

The proposed law aims to make an alternate holiday for pupils in all public schools in the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, New York City. The holiday would be celebrated on the first Thursday in June, unless it falls on Memorial Day, in which case it would be celebrated on the second Thursday in June. This holiday would commemorate the organization of Sunday schools and would be a day off for pupils in these boroughs. The law also allows the chancellor to require pupils in these boroughs to attend school on the designated holiday, but they must declare a public school holiday on an alternate date to allow for the celebration of other significant cultural or religious holidays.
