What S 3226 does, verified January 10, 2026

The bill aims to provide reciprocity for active members of the armed forces of the United States who are licensed to carry a pistol or firearm by another jurisdiction. These individuals can carry a pistol or firearm in New York State for a period of up to 90 days, or while their application is pending. They must carry their out-of-state permit and valid military identification at all times when carrying a pistol or firearm. If stopped by law enforcement, they must disclose their permit and display both the permit and their military ID upon request. The licensing officer must act on an application within six months, or 60 days for active military personnel, unless there is good cause for delay. The bill does not prohibit the issuance of a license to active military personnel who submit the required documentation and proof of a previously obtained license from another state.
