What S 3229 does, verified January 9, 2026
The bill allows the immediate family members of a member of the armed forces who died in active duty to qualify for the alternate veterans exemption. A "gold star family member" is defined as the parent, spouse, child, or sibling of someone who died in the line of duty while serving in the US armed forces during a period of war. The exemption applies to primary residences of gold star family members, and local governments can adopt their own laws to include these members within the definition of "qualified owner" and "qualifying residential real property". The additional exemption does not apply to real property owned by gold star family members.
