The bill aims to strengthen laws related to sexual assault against children by individuals in positions of trust. A person in a position of trust is defined as someone with a duty or responsibility for the health, education, welfare, or supervision of a child. The bill establishes three new degrees of sexual assault against children by individuals in positions of trust: first degree (class C felony), second degree (class E felony), and third degree (class A misdemeanor). The first and second degrees involve sexual contact with a child under the age of 14, while the third degree involves sexual contact with a child under the age of 18. The bill also expands the definition of a class C violent felony offense to include certain crimes committed against children. The law is set to take effect on the first of November next succeeding the date it becomes a law.
