What S 4074 does, verified January 9, 2026

The bill, also known as "Anthony Varvaro's Law," aims to expand the definition of accidental death benefits for state employees who die while traveling to work. The law would consider a member to have died as a result of an accident if they are traveling from their primary residence directly to their place of business or a different location where they were assigned to work. This change would apply to members who die from accidents sustained in the performance of their duties, regardless of whether the accident was caused by their own negligence or not. The bill would also modify the eligibility criteria for accidental death benefits, allowing eligible beneficiaries to receive a pension equal to 50% of the deceased member's wages earned during their last year of service. The law would take effect immediately and would have been in full force and effect on September 11, 2022.
