S 4258: Creates the crime of harassment of a first responder as a class A misdemeanor.
The proposed law aims to protect first responders, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical services personnel. It defines a "first responder" as someone who regularly performs duties such as making arrests, executing warrants, or providing emergency assistance. The law makes it a crime to knowingly and willfully approach or remain within 25 feet of a first responder who has been warned not to approach. This behavior can impede the responder's duty, threaten physical harm, or cause substantial emotional distress. The offense is classified as a class A misdemeanor. The law takes effect on November 1 of the following year after it is passed.
