What S 4553 does, verified January 8, 2026

The bill aims to amend the Administrative Code of the City of New York to provide better compensation for certain promotions in the Detective Bureau. Currently, the Commissioner can designate lieutenants as commanders of detective squads and sergeants as supervisors of detective squads, but they are paid the same salary as their regular duties. The bill proposes that these individuals be paid a higher salary as commanders or supervisors, as determined by the Mayor. Additionally, the bill provides that if a permanent appointment is temporarily reassigned to a higher position, the individual will be permanently appointed to that position after 18 months and receive the corresponding compensation. The bill takes effect immediately.
