What S 4733 does, verified January 8, 2026

The bill aims to reduce waste by requiring state and municipal agencies to purchase compostable single-use tableware. Compostable tableware must meet specific standards, including breaking down into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass during composting, and leaving no visible or toxic residue. Agencies are allowed to purchase compostable products if they are affordable, meaning they cost no more than 15% more than the non-compostable alternative. The bill also applies to municipal agencies, including villages, towns, cities, and counties. The law will take effect 90 days after it is passed.
