S 4946: Establishes a "yellow alert system" for law enforcement to publicize vehicle information in instances of hit-and-run accidents in which a person has been killed.

New York · Senate · 2025–2026 Legislative Session · last verified January 8, 2026

What S 4946 does, verified January 8, 2026

The proposed law creates a "yellow alert system" to quickly disseminate information about vehicles involved in fatal traffic accidents. When a police officer receives a report of a fatal traffic accident, they must share information about the vehicle or vehicles involved and the suspected operator(s) with the public. This information can be broadcasted over police communication systems or transmitted to electronic entry points for further dissemination. The release of this information is not required if it may compromise the investigation or put a victim's safety at risk. The law takes effect 30 days after it becomes law.
