Senate BillIntroduced
S 5199: Establishes the "New York municipal asset forfeiture accountability act" which requires that all funds lawfully seized by a county sheriff or other municipal police agency shall go to such municipalities' general fund.
What S 5199 does, verified January 9, 2026
The New York Municipal Asset Forfeiture Accountability Act establishes a new law to oversee the handling of assets seized by municipal police agencies. The act requires that any funds resulting from the forfeiture of assets be dedicated to the municipal police agency's general fund. This means that the seized assets and any subsequent funds generated from their sale will be used to benefit the agency that seized them, rather than being kept by the county or state. The act takes effect immediately.
