Senate BillIntroduced
S 5346: Provides that a qualified voter may receive an absentee ballot if such voter is unable to appear personally at the polling place of the election district in which such individual is a qualified voter because of a religious observance or practice.
What S 5346 does, verified January 8, 2026
The bill allows qualified voters to cast absentee ballots for religious observance. A voter can request an absentee ballot if they expect to be absent from their voting residence due to illness, physical disability, or military service. Additionally, voters can also request an absentee ballot if they are detained in jail awaiting a grand jury decision or a trial for a non-felony offense. This change expands the reasons for which a voter can cast an absentee ballot, now including religious observance. The bill takes effect on January 1, 2026, and applies to general, primary, run-off primary, or special elections held after that date.
