S 535: Removes the deadly weapon or dangerous instrument requirement from aggravated assault upon a police officer or peace officer.
What S 535 does, verified April 24, 2026
The bill aims to remove the requirement of using a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument in aggravated assault cases against police officers or peace officers. This means that a person can be guilty of aggravated assault if they intentionally cause serious physical injury to a police officer or peace officer while performing their official duties, even if they do not use a deadly weapon or instrument. The revised law would classify this offense as a class B felony. The bill would take effect immediately.
