What S 5402 does, verified May 28, 2025

The bill aims to protect wolves in the state by requiring the reporting of all wild canids taken to the department. Wild canids that weigh over 50 pounds or meet specific criteria must be submitted for genetic analysis to determine their composition. The results of the analysis will be made public on the department's website. If a wild canid is determined to be a wolf, the department will determine the location where it was taken or found and may take measures to protect additional wolves in the area. A report on the status of wolves in the state must be submitted to the legislature by April 1, 2028, and the department will update its syllabus to include the legal protections for wolves and testing requirements. The bill takes effect on January 1, 2026 and will expire on January 1, 2029.
