S 5487: Allows valid certificates of marriage from foreign governments and religious institutions as acceptable documentation to change a name on a driver's license, learner's permit, or identification card.
The proposed law aims to allow valid certificates of marriage from foreign governments and religious institutions to be accepted as documentation for changing a person's name on their driver's license or non-driver identification card. This change will enable individuals to update their name on their identification documents using a marriage certificate from a foreign country or a religious institution that issues such certificates. The law also extends this acceptance to learner's permits, allowing individuals to update their name on these documents as well. The proposed law will take effect 60 days after it becomes a law, and regulations necessary for its implementation will be made effective immediately.
