The state of New York is introducing a new law that aims to improve the fire safety of solar energy systems. The law requires the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to inspect and certify solar energy systems as fire safe. The authority will inspect systems to determine if they are safe and if maintenance records are adequate. If a system fails an inspection, the authority will provide a reason for the failure and a timeframe for the system to pass inspection. The law also requires that safety data sheets be conspicuously posted in areas that emergency responders may access in case of a fire. The authority will submit an annual report to the governor and various committees, detailing the results of inspections and any recommendations for improvement. The report will be made publicly available on the authority's website and the solar energy system company's website.
