What S 58 does, verified January 8, 2026

The bill aims to establish a new crime, making a terroristic threat against a police officer. A person will be guilty of this crime if they intend to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, or influence the policy of a unit of government by intimidation or coercion, and threaten to commit a specified offense against a police officer. This will cause a reasonable expectation or fear of the imminent commission of such an offense against a police officer. The bill removes any defense that the defendant did not have the intent or capability of committing the specified offense or that the threat was not made to a person who was a subject of the threat. This new crime is classified as a class C felony. The law will take effect on the first of November next succeeding the date it becomes law.
