What S 6044 does, verified July 2, 2025

The bill aims to exempt the South Onondaga Fire Department from the requirement that the percentage of non-resident fire department members not exceed forty-five percent of the membership. The exemption allows for non-resident members to be elected or appointed to the fire department, as long as they meet specific requirements. These requirements include being available to render active service as a volunteer firefighter in the specified territory. Non-resident members are subject to the same rules and regulations as resident members, but are not considered to be performing any firefighting duty outside of the state unless they have received authorization. The provisions of the bill do not authorize the election or continuance of any person as a member if it is contrary to the fire department's by-laws, rules, or regulations. The bill takes effect immediately.
