What S 6242 does, verified January 8, 2026

The bill aims to modify the expiration date of vehicle registrations in New York State. Registrations, renewals, and reregistrations will now be valid until the last day of the month in which the registration is valid, unless the expiration date falls on a weekend or holiday, in which case it will be valid until midnight of the next business day. Additionally, if the required proof of registration is an expired registration for the same vehicle, issued to the same person, and the expired registration certificate and number plates have not been surrendered, the commissioner may deem the application as a renewal and compute the fee as if the registration had been made prior to the expiration date. The changes will take effect two years after the bill becomes a law.
