What S 6588 does, verified January 15, 2026

The proposed law aims to alleviate the financial burden on school districts in New York by implementing certain provisions. A mandate is defined as any state law, rule, or regulation that requires a school district to provide a new program or service, or increases an existing one. The law proposes a one-year delay in implementing mandates that impose costs on school districts, unless certain exceptions apply. These exceptions include mandates that are optional, arise from an executive order, or are required by a federal law. The law takes effect immediately.
