What S 6605 does, verified January 8, 2026

The proposed law requires institutions of higher learning in New York State to provide courses in ethnic studies, women's studies, and social justice as an undergraduate graduation requirement. This requirement does not increase the number of units required to graduate with a baccalaureate degree and does not apply to postbaccalaureate students who have earned a degree from an accredited institution or completed an ethnic studies course at a postsecondary educational institution. The law also aims to develop core competencies for students who complete an ethnic studies, women's studies, or social justice course, ensuring they acquire knowledge and skills to comprehend diversity and social justice history.
