S 6783: Promotes the inclusion of children living in temporary housing in prekindergarten programs; requires school districts to prioritize homeless children on any pre-K waitlists and provides for the reimbursement to school districts of hiring additional staff to accommodate the enrollment of a homeless child.
The bill aims to promote the inclusion of children living in temporary housing in prekindergarten programs. The school districts must prioritize the placement of homeless children on waitlists for enrollment in prekindergarten programs when the class size reaches its maximum capacity. Additionally, the bill requires reimbursement for the direct cost of hiring additional staff to accommodate homeless children, if the class size necessitates it. The bill also ensures that the implementation of these provisions takes effect immediately, allowing for the necessary rule-making and adjustments to be made before the actual effective date. The bill will take effect on the 90th day after it becomes a law.
