S 6822: Prohibits contracts for the purchase or financing of a dog or cat from online websites from including provisions allowing repossession of the animal.
The bill aims to protect consumers who purchase or finance pets, such as dogs and cats, by prohibiting certain contracts that allow for the repossession of the animal as a form of collateral. These contracts are prohibited from including provisions that permit the use of the pet as security for payment, which can lead to the animal being repossessed if the buyer fails to make payments. The bill does not prevent the purchase of pets through unsecured loans, nor does it limit other consumer rights and remedies available under other laws. The provisions of the bill apply to both in-person and online sales of pets, ensuring that consumers are protected from unfair and exploitative practices. The bill takes effect immediately.
