What S 7242 does, verified January 8, 2026

The proposed law aims to modify the criminal procedure in New York. It introduces a new requirement for courts to impose a securing order on individuals without permanent residency status who are charged with certain crimes, particularly those involving law enforcement officers. This order would commit the individual to the custody of the sheriff and remain in effect until the completion of judicial proceedings. The law also specifies that this requirement applies to individuals who are not U.S. citizens or lawfully admitted permanent residents.
