S 7633: Relates to actions and proceedings seeking an abatement of rent based on violations of the housing maintenance code, applicable housing standards, the building code, or the health code; relates to the number of housing judges assigned to certain actions.
The bill aims to amend the New York City Civil Court Act to provide relief to tenants and landlords in cases related to housing maintenance code violations. It allows for the abatement of rent in cases where tenants have suffered due to such violations, and this relief will be granted from the time the violation occurs until it is corrected. The bill also requires a specific number of housing judges to be assigned to handle cases involving housing code violations, with at least two judges in most counties and one judge in the county of Richmond, assigned to oversee these cases at least two days a week. The changes will take effect 90 days after the bill becomes a law.
