Senate BillIntroduced
S 7639: Permits political subdivisions and municipal corporations of the state to set the residency requirements for public officer positions.
What S 7639 does, verified January 10, 2026
The bill aims to allow political subdivisions and municipal corporations in the state to set their own residency requirements for certain positions. Currently, a person must be a resident of the subdivision or corporation for which they are chosen or where their official functions are exercised. However, the bill would permit the legislative body of a subdivision or corporation to set or waive these residency requirements through local laws, ordinances, or resolutions. This change would give these subdivisions and corporations more flexibility in determining who can hold certain positions. The bill would take effect ninety days after it becomes a law.
