S 8062: Requires certain utility corporations and the Long Island power authority to establish a meter usage monitor program for the purposes of notifying residential customers when energy usage exceeds a cost or usage threshold in a given billing period determined by the residential customer.
What S 8062 does, verified June 5, 2026
The bill aims to establish a usage monitor program for gas and electric utility customers. The program will provide daily updates on electricity and/or gas usage, allowing customers to view their data online and set a monthly usage threshold. When the customer's usage reaches half of their determined threshold, they will receive an electronic or paper notification, including an estimate of their monthly bill. The program is optional for residential customers and will be based on smart meters that electronically measure and transmit energy usage to the utility for billing and monitoring purposes. The program will take effect one year after the bill becomes a law.
