What S 809 does, verified July 2, 2025

The state of New York is introducing a bill to improve access to doulas for expecting and new mothers. The bill aims to repeal a law that previously restricted doulas from being present in the operating room during cesarean sections. The new law requires all maternal health care facilities to inform patients that they are allowed to have a doula present during delivery and inpatient care post-delivery. The information will be provided in multiple languages, including English and the six most common non-English languages spoken by individuals with limited English proficiency in New York State. The bill also requires facilities to provide written information and informational pamphlets about the presence of doulas. The law will take effect on the same date as a previous bill related to expecting and new mothers' access to their doulas.
