What S 8198 does, verified September 28, 2025

The bill aims to amend the Family Court Act to enhance child safety in family offense cases. The court can now award custody of the child to either parent or an appropriate relative during the term of the order of protection. Before making this decision, the court must review reports from the sex offender registry, statewide computerized registry of orders of protection, and related court decisions. This review helps ensure that the child's safety is prioritized and that the court has access to relevant information. The bill also repeals certain provisions of the law relating to records checks in family offense cases. The new provisions will take effect thirty days after the bill becomes a law.
