S 8254: Relates to extending the provisions of the interstate compact for juveniles.
The state of New York is amending its laws to ensure the effectiveness of its participation in the Interstate Compact for Juveniles. The amendment aims to clarify the terms and conditions under which the compact operates. The revised provisions will take effect 30 days after the bill becomes a law and will expire on September 1, 2025. Prior to this date, certain provisions related to the compact will be revived, allowing for the continued supervision and return of juveniles who have absconded or run away from supervision. The revised laws will not disrupt ongoing services or agreements related to the compact, and the state will continue to enter into agreements with non-compact member states to address the supervision and return of juveniles who have endangered their own safety and the safety of others.
