S 8650: Establishes a caregiver tax credit of up to six thousand dollars and a family caregiver reimbursement program to offset out-of-pocket spending by family caregivers.
The proposed legislation aims to provide financial assistance to caregivers and family members who care for elderly or disabled individuals. It establishes a caregiver tax credit, allowing qualifying taxpayers to claim a credit of up to $6,000 against their taxes, which is 50% of their out-of-pocket spending on caregiver expenses. To qualify, caregivers must take care of an individual requiring assistance with daily activities, meet income eligibility requirements, and qualify as a dependent. Additionally, the legislation creates a family caregiver reimbursement program to offset expenses such as home modifications and assistive technology, administered by the Office for the Aging.
